Auralex TruTraps - FAQs TruTraps - Frequent Asked Questions
TRUTRAPS™ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Can I buy the TruPanels™ or TruSpacers™ as separate items?
A: Yes. TruPanels are available in a box of five (5) panels (40 ft²), and TruSpacers are available in a box quantity of 64
pieces.
Q: Why would I use the TruTraps Broadband Absorption System instead of a Roominators kit such as the Pro Plus?
A: Both are excellent solutions for a medium sized room. The Roominators Pro Plus Kit offers significantly more coverage
and includes 24 ft² of world class diffusion. For a complete room solution, the Roominators offer everything you need and
give you great placement flexibility to fine tune your room. The TruTraps System is more of a specialty product for those
needing broadband absorption, including low frequencies, and understand how to use “off the wall” techniques to enhance
product performance. TruTraps are a great solution
A: With the TruSpacers, you when space is limited, or the only available areas are the corners and
higher on the wall.
Q: Can the TruPanels be spaced 6” or 9” off the wall? have the option of placing the TruPanels across a corner, or spaced off the wall. Using two
of the 3” wide TruSpacers, you can “float” the panel 6” off the wall. Three (3) TruSpacers would allow 9”, however we
have not tested to know how well this would stay in place.
Q: What kind of performance improvement can I expect to get from placing the TruPanels 6” off the wall when compared
to 3”spacing?
A: Testing data for flat on the wall and 3” off the wall is available at www.auralex.com. While we did not test at 6”, you
would likely experience another 10 to 15% gain in performance compared to the 3” space, with the greater increase in the
lower frequencies.
Q: Can I use the TruSpacers on other Auralex products such as Studiofoam® panels?
A: Yes! With our 4” thick panels (Studiofoam Wedge, Pyramids, or Metro) the TruSpacers can be glued to the back of the
panels. For other panels such as our 2” or 3” Studiofoam, we suggest you use some sort of lightweight backing board,
such as Cor–X, for rigidity.
Q: How many TruSpacers do I use per panel?
A: We’ve included eight (8) per panel in the TruTraps System. You may find that you do not have to use all eight on each
panel, and you may also find that you need more than eight for 6” spacing. Please see the TruTraps System Installation
Guide for the many ways that the TruSpacers can be used (conventional spacer, corner spacer, “z–clip” removable panel
spacer…).
Q: Why would you add Q’Fusor diffusors to the front of the TruPanels?
A: To create a hybrid product with great performance characteristics. If you need broadband absorption, particularly on
the low end, but you do not want the space “too dead”, the Q’Fusors will provide an orderly scattering of the mid and high
frequencies, creating a controlled liveliness, while the panels continue to trap arrant reflections and act as effective “bass
traps.”
Q: Should I be concerned about TruTraps and fire safety?
A: TruTraps, like all of our Studiofoam products are tested by an independent lab for flame spread and smoke developed.
All Studiofoam products have a “Class B” rating in accordance with ASTM–E84 testing standards. Unlike other foam
products that may not be rated, Studiofoam is “self–extinguishing.” Per all of our literature, we suggest that the installer or
end–user check with local officials or local building codes before installing any product made by anyone. Auralex
Studiofoam is generally accepted for applications requiring a Class B rating. If “Class A” is a requirement, Auralex has
other products to address your sound issues.
Q: How do I know what to use, or how many TruTrap Systems I may need?
A: Ask Auralex! Send in our Personalized Room Analysis Form and note that
you think TruTraps may be a good solution for you. Our Product Specialists
will offer you suggestions on the amount of treatment needed and placement
suggestions.
In general, we suggest the guidelines in the table to the right forTruTraps.
